I went through the RFC and the Roadmap to 2.0, I don’t see it saying anywhere that itemControllers are going away. Maybe I missed an announcement, but can someone please squelch the rumor or back it with evidence / authority(core team member)?

Yes, using itemController is deprecated in 1.13. We still need a more detailed deprecation guide page (and to link to it in the deprecation message). I would love help with that if someone has time…
